Faecal Microbiota
Transplantation (FMT)

We are proud to offer Faecal Microbiota Transplants (FMT) capsules, produced right here in clinic, in North Croydon.
We are one of the few veterinary hospitals in Australia that are able to produce these capsules, in-house.

What is FMT?

Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is an innovative treatment that transfers beneficial gut bacteria from a carefully screened healthy donor to a pet experiencing digestive or gastrointestinal issues.

The healthy bacteria helps to restore balance within the gut microbiome, which is essential for their gut health, but also their over all wellbeing

How does FMT work?

At NCVC, we prepare high quality oral FMT capsules containing healthy donor microbiota. In some cases, FMT may also be administered via enema, depending on your pet's individual needs and medical condition.

FMT works by replenishing beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract, helping to restore a healthier gut environment and improve digestive function.

Is FMT safe?

FMT is generally considered very safe when performed under veterinary supervision. Most pets tolerate treatment extremely well, with the most common side effect being mild and short term stomach upset.

Accessing FMT Capsules

Your pet is not need to be an existing patient of NCVC to access our FMT capsules.
However, a veterinary consultation is required and considered very valuable when managing chronic gastrointestinal conditions.

Our Donor Screening Program

Not all gut bacteria are equal. That is why our donor pets undergo extensive screening to ensure their microbiome is both safe and beneficial.

Our donor screening process includes:
- Comprehensive health examination and blood testing
- Thorough review of medical history
- Extensive parasite and infectious disease screening
- Dysbiosis Index (DI) testing to confirm a healthy balance of intestinal bacteria

The rigorous process helps ensure that only high-quality, healthy microbiota are used in our FMT preparations.

Conditions that may benefit FMT:

- Acute or chronic diarrhoea
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
- Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
- Clostridium-associated diarrhoea
- General gastrointestinal dysbiosis or gut imbalance

Additional potential benefits may include:

- Improved digestion and nutrient absorption
- Support for immune system function
- Enhanced overall wellbeing
- Reduced reliance on long term antibiotic use

Could FMT help your pet?

If your cat or dog is struggling with digestive problems, recurring diarrhoea, chronic gastrointestinal disease or has recently completed a course if antibiotics, FMT may be a suitable treatment option.

Our veterinary team will take the time to understand your pet's individual needs and guide you through the most appropriate treatment options available.
